Paving machines are large, powerful machines essential for roadwork. Each one has a specific purpose for completing a job. These machines make the paving process faster and more efficient, which helps everyone in the long run. Majority of paving jobs use these four specialized machines. Ready to find out more?

Paving can take quite a while. Without these pieces of equipment, it would take much, much longer. Although, these big grumbling beasts can get pretty dirty on the job. Paving uses chemicals and solutions to create a compound that can withstand the weight and use of daily driving. Our paving machines make that possible. Let’s check them out.

From public roadways to private driveways, Level Pro has a paving solution for you. If you are in need of paving services, contact us today.

The Big Four

The following are four typical pieces of paving machines that are uses in the paving industry. They are not the only machines used. Each job is a little different and we may use other pieces of equipment. Common machines are dozers, tractors, and dump trucks. Specialized equipment for paving jobs include the milling machines, pavers, tankers and compactors.

  1. Milling Machines

Milling machines are also known as cold planers. These machines are important for removing asphalt. When asphalt can be resurfaced, the milling machines remove a few inches of the existing asphalt. When this top has been removed, the remainder is a solid, flat surface. The process leaves a texture to the top of the roadway. With a textured surface, new asphalt can be applied with better adhesion.

  1. Paver Machine

When people imagine paving machines, this one is usually it. Put simply, the paver machine applies the asphalt. This machine is responsible for pouring asphalt onto the prepared roadway. It then flattens the asphalt while providing enough compaction to keep it stabilized. This machine is fed prepared asphalt. It does not make asphalt.

  1. Asphalt Compactors

Compactors are often called rollers. The machines that you see with broad flat drums for wheels are compacters. These machines use vibrations and weight as they roll to create tighter compaction. For asphalt, a compactor removes any possible bubbles, strengthening the roadway. This process is important to the longevity of the roadway.  Loosely packed asphalt can lead to crumbling or potholes sooner than expected.

  1. Distributor Tanks

Of the paving machines, this one is essential. After the milling process, the asphalt must be coating to prep it for the new asphalt. A distributor tank can evenly spay that chemical coating on the surface. It comes back out at the very end of the paving process to apply a sealant. Sealant protects the surface of asphalt from environmental and man-made dangers. For instance, UV rays, gas, oil, oxygen and water can each weaken asphalt in one way or another.
